DENVER, Colo. – Teddy Stiga scored the game-tying goal with 46 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime as the No. 18/17 Boston College men’s hockey team overturned a two-goal deficit to claim a 2-2 tie against No. 4 Denver on Saturday evening at Magness Arena. The Eagles won the shootout 1-0, but the game officially goes down as a tie.
BC moves to 1-3-1 on the season while Denver is now 3-2-1.
Matias Vanhanen led the way with two points on one goal and one assist. Teddy Stiga also scored for the Eagles, while Matthew Grimes, Dean Letourneau, and Luka Radivojevic each tallied an assist. Louka Cloutier made 21 between the pipes.
The Eagles went on a five-minute power play early in the contest after Denver’s Kyle Chyzowski was called for contact to the head, but the Pioneers rebuffed all the BC attempts to keep the game scoreless.
Just after the penalty expired, Letourneau nearly put the Eagles in front but his shot from the slot rang off the crossbar.
Denver went ahead 2-0 with two goals in the second period, but BC cut into the deficit with less than two minutes to go in the middle frame.
Radivojevic took a shot from the blue line that deflected off the back of a Denver defender and the puck fell towards Vanhanen who struck it out of the air and into the back of the net to put the Eagles on the board going into the final period.
With time winding down and BC needing to find the equalizer, the Eagles pulled Cloutier with roughly two minutes in favor of the extra attacker. The move paid off as with 46 seconds to go, Vanhanen found Stiga across the face of goal to smash it in to tie the game and send it to overtime.
Neither team was able to find the breakthrough during the extra five minutes, resulting in a tie.
In the shootout, Letourneau was the lone scorer, giving the Eagles the 1-0 win in the shootout.
