Retiring World Cup Referee Ismail Elfath A U.S. Soccer All-Time Great

One of the more distinctive aspects of professional soccer is the attention given to its top referees.

There is one definitive man in the middle, without a hat, helmet, or mask to obscure his face. He is often as expressive with his body as his voice in a sport where language differences are extremely commonplace and gestures become critical for communication.

That heightened exposure has enabled some of the world’s most accomplished referees to achieve their own celebrity status, like Italy’s Pierluigi Collina or England’s Howard Webb, alongside the stars whose matches they officiate.

If there is such a figure in U.S. soccer, it is Ismail Elfath, who announced his retirement on social media on Sunday after taking charge of a match in his home city of Austin, Texas, on Saturday night.

The Moroccan-born Elfath is not a global name, having spent the majority of his domestic career in MLS. Unlike players, referees generally can’t advance beyond their home nation’s top flight when it comes to domestic league officiating.

But when it comes to accomplishments in the men’s world game, the 44-year-old departs as arguably the most decorated American in any role, let alone in the officiating space.

    Two World Cups

Elfath told USA Today his personal career peak came this past summer when he was in the middle for the politically fraught World Cup semifinal between England and Argentina. That’s understandable.

Elfath was the first-ever U.S. head referee to work at that stage. He was the first American of any sort to patrol a men’s World Cup semifinal pitch since the U.S. team reached the inaugural semifinal in 1930, a tournament with only 13 teams and one that saw most visiting delegations arrive by boat.

But Elfath’s most iconic World Cup moment may have come four years prior on matchday 3 of group stage play.

With Brazil guaranteed passage to the next round and Cameroon’s fate beyond their own control, Cameroonian attacker Vincent Aboubakar scored a nonetheless historic matchwinner in second-half stoppage time, then removed his shirt in celebration.

With Aboubakar already on a yellow, Elfath had no choice but to issue a second caution to Aboubakar in accordance with the laws of the game. As he did so, he motioned to his heart and fist-bumped Aboubakar in an apologetic gesture that became one of the tournament’s enduring moments.

That warmth made Elfath stand out in so many games throughout his career, be it while twice winning MLS referee of the year, or while officiating at two World Cups, the 2024 Copa America, the 2021 African Cup of Nations or dozens of matches in various Concacaf competitions.

    Replay Review

It also suggested a devotion to getting the call right, even if it meant admitting an error, a trait that may have paved the way for another important role as a VAR pioneer.

Elfath became the first head referee in the world to consult a video review in a competitive league fixture in August of 2016 during testing of the technology in the second-tier USL Championship.

He later worked in VAR booths at the FIFA level from 2022 to 2024, and leaned into VAR duties domestically while recovering from a significant knee injury from mid-2024 to mid-2025.

Elfath is retiring a year before what was once the maximum age for FIFA referees, a restriction that was significantly relaxed in 2014. He would be 48 by the time the next World Cup comes around. Very few officials worldwide have participated in three separate World Cup finals. And the annual fitness tests that become mandatory after age 45 could potentially be perilous given the recent knee injury history.

And so he departs after a summer in which he cemented his status as the most visible American official in World Cup history. And it would be extremely surprising if Elfath doesn’t follow in the footsteps of Collina, Webb and others who have moved on to advisory roles following their on-field careers.

Whether that happens or not, he leaves the field as one of the all-time great U.S. soccer contributors. And not just among officials.
