CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Schiller Family Head Hockey Coach Greg Brown has announced that former Boston College standout Ben Smith ’10 has joined the men’s hockey staff as an assistant coach.
Smith joins the staff after spending the 2025-26 year as a Player Development Coordinator for the Boston Bruins.
Smith, a 2010 graduate of Boston College, played four years on the Heights and helped the Eagles win three Hockey East Tournament Championships, two Beanpot titles and two National Championships (2008, 2010). Over his four-year career, he skated in 165 games, posting 122 points on 57 goals and 65 assists, and served as an alternate captain during the National Championship season in 2009-10.
Selected by the Chicago Blackhawks with the 169th overall pick in the 2008 NHL Draft, he went on to play in 237 games over seven seasons in the NHL with Chicago, San Jose, Colorado and Toronto, and won the Stanley Cup in 2013 with Chicago.
Internationally, Smith earned a bronze medal with Team USA at the 2015 IIHF World Championship in Czechia.
After seven years in the NHL, Smith was the captain of the Toronto Marlies of the AHL during the 2017-18 season, leading the Marlies to their first-ever Calder Cup. Smith went on to play seven years of professional hockey in Germany (DEL) and Sweden (SHL), winning German championships with Adler Mannheim in 2019 and Red Bull München in 2023.
