NEW BOSTON — A pair of first-year coaches made an impression on the Huron League.
St. Mary Catholic Central boys coach Roman Smith and Milan girls coach Noah Genson led their teams to championships in the league meet on Tuesday, May 19.
Both meets were extremely close.
SMCC’s boys scored 114.5 points to hold off Jefferson’s second-place total of 98.

New Boston Huron finished fourth with 90.5, Milan fifth with 69.5, Airport seventh with 50 and Flat Rock eighth with 38.
The girls meet was even tighter.

Milan scored 118.5 to finish three ahead of SMCC.
“An amazing year from an even more amazing group of girls,” Genson said. “This was a group of competitors and they never let a ranking before a meet define them. They also stepped up to the challenge and gave it their all every single meet. I could not be more proud of the things we accomplished this season.”
Huron was third with 95.5, Airport sixth with 65, Jefferson seventh with 37 and Flat Rock eighth with 29.5.
Christian Craanen led SMCC’s boys by winning the 1,600 and 3,200 and anchoring the winning 3,200 relay.

Gavin Swartout was the winner in the 100 meters and ran on the winning 400 relay.
The Falcons also took the 800 relay, giving them victories in three of the four relays. Cole Reinhardt, Vince Harris, Brady Reinhardt, Carson Welker, Easton Kwiatkowski, Phineas Totten, Max Foldvary and Brennan Menzies all were part of winning relays.
Josh Hargraeves (400) and Orion Galloway (800) and ran with Noah Hintz and Maddex Shotwell on the winning 1,600 relay.

Milan’s Braeden Lerette was the winner in both hurdle races.
New Boston Huron’s Braden Munroe ruled the high jump.
Angelina Wilson was the standout for Milan’s champion girls team.
She led a sweep of the top three places in the 400 meters with Madison Lancaster and Victoria Kimberly and anchored the winning 800 relay with Lancaster, Jada Stines and Kaily McDaniel.

Adela Illes had a big meet for SMCC’s girls. She won the 100 and 200 meters and was part of the winning 400 and 1,600 relays.
Olivia Beaudrie took first in the high jump and was part of the 400 relay.
Other Kestrels on first-place relays were Angie Illes, Katelyn Boberg, Ava Lucarelli and Bella LaFountain.

Ella Baker of Airport doubled up with wins in the 800 and 1,600 and teammate Olivia Kemp was tops in the discus.
New Boston Huron’s Falyn Doss won the 3,200 and brought home the 3,200 relay in first place. Other members of the relay were Zoey Cheney, Alexis White and Ellia Egle.
Breanna Sexton of Flat Rock was the champion in the shot-put.
TUESDAY’S TOP PERFORMERS
BASEBALL
Hunter Hemelgarn, Ida: Carried a perfect game into the seventh inning and finished with a 1-hitter with nine strikeouts in a 3-0 victory over Onsted. The Blue Streaks (25-6) clinched the Lenawee County Athletic Association title with a 17-3 record. Trent Pfeiffer and Carter Derian logged two hits each in the first game and Grant Pfeiffer went 4-for-5 in the second. Cam Riggs added three hits and Trent Pfeiffer two in the nightcap.
Brayden Mason, Dundee: Picked up three hits for the day as the Vikings fell 6-2 and 13-7 to Adrian Madison. Wyatt Hickey went 2-for-5 and drove in three runs in the second game.
SOFTBALL
Madison Cousino, Dundee: Went 3-for-3 with a double and scored twice in an 8-7 loss to Adrian Madison. The Vikings (5-18-1) dropped the first game 13-3. Abby Marek and Ella Rath also finished the day with three hits each. Juliet Rouse went 2-for-2 in the first game.
GOLF
Taleon Guess, Bedford, and Grady Gottschalk, Monroe: Both shot 82 at Leslie Park in the Southeastern Conference Red championships. Bedford tied for fourth with 341 and Monroe was seventh with 345. Saline took the team title with 302.
