Monroe County Region high school sports roundup for April 15-17

MONROE – There weren’t any extra water hazards at Green Meadows Golf Course.

While several area golf courses closed because they were saturated with water, Green Meadows was ready.

That was good news for the Huron League which played its first jamboree of the season there on Friday, April 17.

“It was soggy in a few areas, but Green Meadows drains really well,” said Flat Rock coach Marc Villemure. “They always do a great job out there.”

There was one another weather issue.

“Our biggest dilemma was fog,” Villemure said. “You couldn’t see more than 200 yards. We were worried we might lose a lot of golf balls.”

The event was delayed about an hour until the fog cleared.

Grosse Ile wound up winning the jamboree with a score of 306, 10 strokes better than Flat Rock and 12 clear of Airport.

“We played pretty well,” Villemure said. “We had some good scores up there.”

New Boston Huron was fourth with 327, St. Mary Catholic Central fifth with 342, Milan sixth with 349 and Jefferson eighth with 370.

Grosse Ile had the top two individual scores with Nicholas Joly-Naso (70) and Braden Chessor (76).

Airport’s Austin Tackett and the Flat Rock duo of Ben Scully and Colin Gilleran tied for third at 77.

New Boston Huron’s Ryan Biller was next with 80, then Owen Klein and Joel Scully of Flat Rock, Isaac Williamson of Huron, Evan Mullins and Samuel Mitocariu of Airport and SMCC’s Cade Wasner all checked in at 81.

Sam Jenness and Brody Cicotte of Milan and Jefferson’s Ben Peer led their teams with 83.

FRIDAY’S TOP PERFORMERS

BASEBALL

Owen DeLano, New Boston Huron: Smashed a three-run home run in the third inning and earned the pitching win propelling Huron to a 12-0 win over Airport. He had two hits along with Cash Moczydlowsky, Dominic Russo and Max Morse. Ryan Burgor and Cale Jones had the only hits for Airport.

Jett Jones, Jefferson: The No. 9 hitter in the batting order went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs during a 4-2 win over St. Mary Catholic Central. Hunter Barton earned the win with relief help from Jonathan Leffew.

Jacob Towne, Ida: Went 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs and two RBI in a 9-1 romp over Blissfield. Gavin Albring also had two hits, Cam Riggs doubled, scored twice and drove in two runs and Hunter Hemelgarn and Carter Derian combined on a 4-hitter for the 8-3 Blue Streaks. “Played well today, defense, pitching and timely hitting,” said Ida coach Jimmy McMonagle. “We put together a complete game.”

Brody Leonard, Bedford: Went 2-for-4 with a double and drove in three runs to spark a 5-4 win over Ann Arbor Pioneer. Jaxson Lestock and Brett McGraw also had two hits. Bedford won the second game 4-1 behind strong pitching by Chase Atkins. Nick Coberley had two hits in that game and Jason Bryant drove in two runs for the 7-0 Mules.

Jack Foor, Dundee: Went 1-for-3 and drove in a run during a 7-3 loss to Clinton.

Anderson Moore, Erie Mason: Gave up just three hits and no earned runs but lost a pitchers’ duel 2-1 to Lenawee Christian. TJ Langenderfer has the lone hit for Mason. Six errors were costly as the Eagles dropped the second game 8-2.

SOFTBALL

Brityn Duffy, Airport: Snapped a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth inning with an RBI double. Julia Dyson and Alayna McDaniel and combined on a 4-hit shutout of Flat Rock 3-0. “Our girls hit the ball hard all night but struggled to find openings against a tough Flat Rock defense,” said Airport coach Jess Irwin after watching her team improve to 10-0.

Lauren Dunwoody and Averie Gendron, Gibraltar Carlson: Notched two hits apiece in a 6-5 loss to Woodhaven.

Alexis Vance, Milan: Crafted a 3-for-3 game at the plate with a double to power a 13-1 victory over Jefferson. Charleigh Meggison added a double and a run-producing single and Reese Knox smacked a two-run double Kendyll Fell tossed four no-hit innings.

GIRLS TENNIS

Sarah Pente, Gibraltar Carlson: Won at No. 1 to lead a sweep of the top three singles matches during a 6-2 triumph over Bedford. Skylar Warren and Monica Steinmetz also were singles winners and Riley Graham-Gabby Peer, Mena Sladich-Madelyn Mead and Sophia Gaynier-Molly Owen prevailed in doubles. Bedford’s points came from Dorothy Dillon and Tara Thompson-Riley Sucheck.

TRACK AND FIELD

Julia Hughes, Ida: Ran to victory in both hurdle races and was part of two wining relays to lead the Blue Streaks to first place in the Whitmore Lake Invitational. She set a school record of :46.58 in the high hurdles. Relay teammates were Holly Clifton, Kaidence Weaver, Claire May, Gabi Garner and Camilla Mommerency. Gensler cleared a personal-best 5-1 to win the high jump and was third in the long jump. Madelynn Roderick was second in both the high jump and long jump and Lana Benware third in the high jump. Other top-five finishes came from Mommerency, Ryleigh Rowe, Dundee’s team of Mckenzie Heath, Alexandra Haddix, Aisley Cousino and Maddie Salenbien set a school record while winning the 800 relay and the Vikings ruled the 1,600 relay with Cousino, McKenzie Mantei, Mallory Eby and Alexis Hovizi. Seconds for the Vikings came from Salenbien, Sophia Nolff and Merry Schwab.Alayna Markey, Addyson Wilt and Grace May. Kaylee Sawasky of the Monroe Milers had a third and a fourth.

Dylan Jarrett, Ida: Won the shot-put with a personal best of 43-2 and was second in the discus to help Ida take third out of 15 teams in the Whitmore Lake Invitational. Braden Bydlowski was was second in the pole vault and part of the runner-up 1,600 relay. Also landing in the top five were Brandon Tross, Cameron Cogan and Luke Stanley. Dundee got firsts from Jayden Sharpe (800), Ranveer Singh (discus), Braxton Ellison (long jump) and the 3,200 relay of Sharpe, Miles Fritzler, Mason Edlebrock and Alex Tremonti. Anthony York and Pierce Okoney brought home seconds. Colton Childress of the Monroe Milers was third in the 1,600.

AJ Varner, Bedford: Won the high hurdles in :5.26 at the Toledo St. John’s Titan Relays. Cameron Varner (1,600) and Dane Hieronimus (3,200) were second for the Mules and Logan Thomas (800), Cain Cole (pole vault) and the 800 relay of Thomas, Youssif Jomaa, Brandon McCloud and Bryce McCloud took thirds.

Makenna Shipe and Elena Miller, Summerfield: Shipe was second in the discus and Miller second in the shot-put as the Bulldogs won the Clinton Throwers Invitational. Gabi Myshock was third in the discus and Taylor Westrick, Avery Kane and Zoe Bell also contributed to the win. The boys placed second led by JT Lemert, Nick Perez and Hayden Dusseau.

THURSDAY’S TOP PERFORMERS

BASEBALL

Dominic Russo, New Boston Huron: Drove in three runs to power an 8-4 victory over Detroit Catholic Central. Cash Moczydlowsky, Noah Banas and Jackson Surma paced a 10-hit attack with two each and Aiden Sainato led an errorless defensive effort.

SOFTBALL

Alexis Williams, Whiteford: Racked up a pair of hits during a 7-6 loss to Toledo Central Catholic in nine innings. The game was played indoors at the Rossford Toca Dome. The Bobcats dipped to 5-2.

BOYS LACROSSE

Jalen Porter, Bedford: Scored four times to spark a 13-4 triumph over Ann Arbor Skyline. “Despite the brutal weather to start, the Kicking Mules put on a great show of determination,” Bedford coach Steve Ullery said. Jason Grajczyk added a trio of goals while Landyn Maly and Kyle Burger notched two apiece. Dillon Kaun and Jackson Root had the other goals and Bryce Senyo led the defense in front of Eli Koontz.

WEDNESDAY’S TOP PERFORMERS

GIRLS SOCCER

Miley Skamiera, New Boston Huron: Poured in four goals and two assists during an 8-0 win over Jefferson-Erie Mason. The game was halted after 31 minutes by heavy rain. Avery Turk tallied two goals and four assists. Other goals came from Malaya Singer and Kayla Christensen. Brooke Burke posted the shutout and Nhi Vo and Maiya Thomas played well. “Jefferson was strong and physical, definitely a much better program than years past,” Huron coach Matt Lividini said.
