After nine games, the Red Sox have the worst record in baseball.

The Red Sox have lost seven of their first nine games, putting Boston in possession of the worst record in baseball.

It’s the worst Red Sox start since 2019. They’ve lost their first three series and were swept by Houston.

After an 8-6 loss to the Padres at Fenway Park on Sunday, Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony said the results were not acceptable.

“This is unacceptable,” Anthony said. “It’s unacceptable to the fans, it’s unacceptable to the standard that we set for ourselves,” Anthony said. “So, it’s a simple as showing up and doing everything you possibly can whether that be the night before or the day of.”

“Just prepare as best as we can and kind of just feed off of each other and leave it up to the next guy, and do everything you can to find a way on, find a way to execute pitches and do everything you can to help the team win.”

The Red Sox’ performance at the plate has been below average so far. They’re 17th in batting average, 18th in OPS, 20th in RBIs, and 22nd in on-base percentage.

They’ve also been error-prone defensively. Boston has nine errors, which is tied for the third-most in the league.

Roman Anthony makes it clear the way the Red Sox are playing is unacceptable.

The pitching staff has a collective 4.71 ERA, which is tied for 23rd. Only the Nationals and Astros have given up more home runs than the Red Sox (13).

Nine games is a small sample-size over the course of a 162-game season. The Red Sox have been on the road for six of them.

The opponents haven’t been bad, either. The Reds and Padres were playoff teams last year. The Astros finished two games in back of the Red Sox for the final wild-card spot.

It’s clear that beginning the season at the bottom of the AL East after a 2-7 start is not what the Red Sox expected.

They’ve faced some early adversity. There are many games left to be played. It’s a bad start, and the team could use some energy to help turn it around.

“You just continue to show up every day, work your a** off, get in the video room, and be as prepared as you possibly can,” Anthony said. “I don’t think that we’re not doing that, I think it’s just a tough stretch. We need to find a way to bring more energy and just be better.”
