Massachusetts could see some spring snowfall this week, according to the National Weather Service.

Most of the state is expected to receive a trace to a half-inch of snow late Monday, April 6, into Tuesday, April 7, with little to no accumulation, meteorologists said.

Although it’s spring, a bit of wintry weather in April isn’t unusual for the Bay State, according to Francis Tarasiewicz, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Norton.

“It is fairly common to have snow in April,” Tarasiewicz said. “If you recall the April Fools’ Day storm [in 1997] – which brought several feet of snow to the higher terrain in Massachusetts – even large snowstorms are certainly not out of the realm of possibility.”

While surface temperatures are warmer this time of year, it’s still “quite cold” in the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere, he said.

Here’s what to know about the expected April snow in Massachusetts.

When, where might it snow in MA?

Throughout much of the state, especially in the higher elevations, a mix of rain and snow is possible Monday night into Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

In Boston, snow could begin falling early Tuesday morning, switching to rain showers by 7 a.m. Another chance of snow is possible between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m.

In Worcester, a slight chance of snow showers is expected before 4 a.m. Tuesday, with additional snow showers possible after 5 a.m. Rain is then likely between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

In Lowell, snow showers could develop before 9 a.m. Tuesday, followed by a chance of rain showers throughout the afternoon. A mix of rain and snow remains possible before 7 p.m., with snow showers again in the evening.

In Fitchburg, a mix of rain and snow is possible before 11 a.m. Tuesday. Snow showers may follow between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., with a return to a rain-snow mix in the afternoon.

After the cold weather, the region is expected to warm up this weekend, with temperatures climbing into the 60s and 70s, Tarasiewicz said.
