Boston College overcame No. 9 Virginia 5-3 Friday in a series opener in Massachusetts, holding the usually prolific UVA offense to seven hits. BC’s Kyle Wolff was 2 for 3 with a run and two RBIs for BC (19-8, 7-3 Atlantic Coast Conference).

Eagles left-hander AJ Colarusso (2-1) got the victory, striking out six, walking three and limiting the Cavaliers (21-6, 6-3) to four hits and a run in six innings. Cesar Gonzalez pitched the last three innings for a save despite yielding two runs in the ninth.

Sam Harris, Joe Tiroly and Jake Weatherspoon each had two hits for the Cavaliers, and Tiroly drove in two runs.

Lefty starter Kyle Johnson (0-1) took the loss, giving up two runs in two innings. Henry Zatkowski pitched six innings of relief for the Cavaliers.

Stanford 9, Virginia Tech 7: The Cardinal (12-12, 2-5 ACC) won the opener of a three-game series against the Hokies (12-12, 4-6) in Blacksburg, thanks in large part to a five-run eighth that wiped out a 5-4 deficit.

Teddy Tokheim hit a three-run homer in the eighth that put Stanford ahead 8-5. He was 3 for 4 with two runs and five RBIs.

For the Hokies, Pete Daniel was 4 for 5 with a run and two RBIs and Hudson Lutterman was 2 for 5 with two RBIs.

    Both teams used five pitchers.

South Alabama 10, Old Dominion 3: The Monarchs (12-13, 2-5 Sun Belt) fell behind 7-0 and couldn’t catch the Jaguars (17-9, 4-3) in a series opener in Mobile.

ODU starter Darin Kuskie (2-4) gave up 10 hits and seven earned runs in three innings.

USA leadoff batter Brennon Wright was 4 for 5 with a run and five RBIs, and Jaxon Shineflew pitched 3 1/3 shutout innings to save the victory for Mitchell Heer (4-0).

TJ Aiken led ODU by going 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Scotty Young homered, Nick Felton doubled and scored, and Macaddin Dye was 2 for 4 with a double.

UNC Wilmington 5, William & Mary 3: Leading by three runs, the Tribe (11-13, 3-4 Coastal Athletic Association) saw the host Seahawks (17-8, 6-1) score five in the bottom of the seventh and hold on for a series-opening victory before 1,620 at Brooks Field.

Four hits and four walks in that inning proved decisive, dealing Tribe reliever Daniel Lingle a loss. Kevin Jones drew a bases-loaded walk on a 3-2 pitch for the go-ahead run.

W&M starter Zach Boyd pitched four shutout innings, striking out four. Chase Ecker had two hits, Jamie Laskofski and Charlie Iriotakis were 2 for 4 with an RBI apiece, and Jett Humphreys extended his hitting streak to five games and his RBI streak to four games.

Mercyhurst 11, Norfolk State 2: The Lakers (5-14, 5-5 Northeast Conference) earned a series-opening victory over the Spartans (8-16, 5-5) in Erie, Pennsylvania, as Ranciel Ventura was 3 for 5 with a homer, two runs and four RBIs. Winner Matthew Delvaux held NSU to two runs, three hits and three walks in seven innings, striking out seven, and Nolan Kirsch with two hitless innings of relief.

NSU starter Donovan Whitfield gave up four runs (two earned), a walk and five hits in five innings for the loss.

Brendan Burke’s two-run double in the sixth was NSU’s offensive highlight.

Regent 13, Johnson & Wales-Charlotte 1: The Royals (11-11) began their first Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference series by blowing out the Wildcats (3-17) in 6 1/2 innings at Landstown High. Winner Will Maloney (4-1) struck out eight in five innings.

Maddox German was 3 for 4 with three RBIs and three runs, falling just a triple short of the cycle. Nathan Vaughan was 2 for 4 with a double, two runs, an RBI and a stolen base, and Jayden Alvarez, Dylan Oblepias and Ben Tweedy drove in two runs apiece.

Apprentice 4-15, Virginia State 2-0: The Builders (21-4, 7-1 New South Athletic Conference) increased their winning streak to seven games with a doubleheader sweep of the Trojans (8-8, 0-3) at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton.

In Game 1, Brayden Hayes struck out six in six innings, and Grant Stratton pitched a 1-2-3 seventh for a save. Jackson Thomas’ RBI single in the first and his RBI double in the third, followed by Seth Harrison’s run-scoring single, made it 3-0. Late that inning, Baker Green stole second and came around to score on a pair of throwing errors.

VSU responded with RBI hits by Antonio Boone and Jaquan Tucker in the sixth but couldn’t catch up.

Game 2 was stopped after five innings because of a mercy rule. The Builders plated 10 runs in the first inning, and Charley Higginbotham (4-2) pitched a three-hitter without a strikeout. Nate Yeary and Harrison drove in four runs apiece, Landon Turner was 3 for 4 with two runs and an RBI, and Drew Barbosa was 2 for 3 with three runs and two RBIs.
