CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Boston College Baseball (15-8, 5-3 ACC) defeated Cal (13-10, 0-5 ACC) in the second of three games this weekend, 9-6.

Tyler Mudd started for the Eagles and went three innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out two. He was replaced by John D Mitchell, who went 2.2 innings, giving up two earned runs while striking out one. Luke D’Ancona came on after Mitchell and threw an inning and a third in relief, allowing an earned run while striking out one. Kyle Kipp went on for two innings and earned the save after not allowing a run, while striking out one.

The Golden Bears struck first in the top of the first inning. Cal put runners on second and third before their third batter of the game launched a 358-foot home run to left field that scored three runs to give the Golden Bears the lead right away.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Eagles got one back. After Ty Mainolfi reached on a fielder’s choice, he advanced to second on a balk before being brought home on a double from Jack Toomey.

Cal restored the three-run advantage in the top of the fourth, after Mitchell got the first two outs of the inning courtesy of Gunnar Johnson throwing out a runner and a fly out to center. However, the Golden Bears then got a runner to second after a wild pitch. The runner was then brought home from second on a single to left that made it 4-1 in favor of Cal.

The Golden Bears tacked on a fifth run in the top of the fifth inning on a solo shot to deep center field that went 426-feet to make it 5-1.

Boston College plated eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 9-5 lead into the seventh. Julio Solier would lead the inning off with a walk and was brought in on a double from Mainolfi down the right field line. The Eagles would then load the bases when a pitch hit Nick Wang, and Toomey singled up the middle. Danny Surowiec then launched his first career home run, 428 feet to left field, to give Boston College a 6-5 lead.

The Eagles then reloaded the bases after a wild pitch and two walks and were able to make it 7-5 when Solier earned the walk. Mainolfi would knock in two more RBI when his sac fly to deep right field scored Johnson and Owen DeShazo to make it 9-5.

Cal would add their third homer of the day in the top of the seventh on a 381-foot home run to left field that would make it 9-6.

Kipp worked around a second and third with one out jam in the eighth to get a strikeout and a groundout before going 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth to seal the save.

Up Next: The Eagles will return to action tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. for the finale of their series with the Golden Bears.
