CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Boston College Baseball hosts California in their first home conference series of the season. The teams will play from March 20th to 22nd. First pitches are slated for 2:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m., and noon, with action streaming live on ACCNX.

    Record vs Cal

Boston College is 2-5 all-time when squaring off with the Golden Bears, and 1-2 while at home. The Eagles dropped two of three to Cal last season, but won the middle game of the series in Berkeley, 10-9. Boston College used a three-run ninth inning to take its first lead of the game, courtesy of a throwing error and a two-RBI double by Esteban Garcia. John Kwiatkowski earned the win that day, with Dylan Howanitz picking up the save.

    Scouting the Golden Bears

Cal enters the weekend series at 13-8, having lost their last five straight following 11 consecutive wins. The Golden Bears hit .299 as a team, with Hideki Prather (.380), Cade Campbell (.354), and Daniel Murillo (.352) leading the way as they all hit over .350. Cal arms combine for a 3.81 ERA, including 74 earned runs and 175 strikeouts. Oliver De La Torre leads the way with 28 strikeouts, and the Golden Bears have three pitchers with over 25 strikeouts and sub-3.00 ERAs.

    The Matchups

Friday afternoon’s matchup will see A.J. Colarusso take on Cal’s Oliver De La Torre. Colarusso is 1-1 this season with a 4.37 ERA and 22 strikeouts, which are a team high. In his last outing at NC State, he went a season high six innings, while allowing three earned runs and striking out four. De la Torre is 1-3 this year with a 2.96 ERA and 28 strikeouts. In his last outing against North Carolina, he went 5.1 innings, giving up four earned runs and striking out five.

Saturday will see Tyler Mudd against Ethan Foley. Mudd is 1-2 this season with a 4.71 ERA and 13 strikeouts. In his last outing, he came on in relief against Sacred Heart and threw a scoreless inning en route to earning his first save of the season. Foley is 2-1 this year with a 4.21 ERA and 16 strikeouts. His last start came at the weekend against the Tar Heels, where he went six innings while striking out five and giving up three earned runs.

The finale features Brady Miller against Gavin Eddy. Miller has not been credited with a decision yet this season in three starts. He has nine strikeouts and an ERA of 2.00. His last start came against NC State, where he went four innings, allowed one earned run, and struck out two. Eddy is 3-1 this year with 27 strikeouts and an ERA of 2.73. He last started against UNC, going 3.1 innings with 4 earned runs and 3 strikeouts.

    Last Time Out

Boston College swept both its midweek games, defeating Sacred Heart, 5-4, and UMass Lowell, 12-2. Ty Mainolfi led the offense on Tuesday as he had three hits and two RBI in his home debut. On the mound, the Eagles threw five pitchers against the Pioneers, including John D Mitchell, who matched his career high with six strikeouts. Against the River Hawks, Boston College hit three home runs, including Danny Surowiec’s first career home run, which was a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning. Colin Larson and Jack Toomey also went deep during the afternoon.  Toomey had four RBI against UMass Lowell, followed by Nick Wang, who had three, and Larson with two. The Eagles stole six bases over the two games, with Mainolfi and Larson each stealing two, while Julio Solier and Wang also stole one.
