TUCSON, Ariz. (KGUN) — Tucson will get a little bit of that FIFA World Cup fever this summer as it serves as a team base camp training site for the Iran National Team (IR Iran).
The tournament is being played in 16 stadiums across Canada, Mexico and the United States, with 48 teams from around the world participating.
It begins at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on June 11 and ends at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J, on July 19.
Teams were able to choose which cities they wanted to use as training camps, picking from a curated list provided by FIFA.
Iran will play all three of its group stage matches on the West Coast, with the opener against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15. They will also take on Belgium in Los Angeles (June 21) and Egypt in Seattle (June 26).
FC Tucson, the city’s USL League Two team, played a key role in “promoting and positioning the venue as a host site.”
Due to the presence of the Iran National Team training at Kino, FC Tucson said in the news release that “there will be adjustments to (local) training access, match scheduling, and facility operations.”
