Snow suits, snow booties and serious side‑eye, dogs prepared to go out in the freezing cold.
A few inches of snow could blanket Massachusetts this weekend, starting late Friday, Feb. 6, according to the National Weather Service.
And as an arctic cold front moves through the region, temperatures are expected to drop significantly. Gusty winds will bring bitter wind chills, making the air in some places feel as low as -30 degrees on Sunday, Feb. 8, NWS said.
An extreme cold warning has been issued for parts of central and western Massachusetts, while a lesser cold weather advisory is in place for areas closer to the coast.
“The snow’s not going to be nearly what we had a week and a half ago [on Jan. 25 and 26]. We’re not going to have anything of that intensity,” said Frank Nocera, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Norton. “But, unfortunately, it’s going to be the coldest air mass of the winter so far.”

Expected snow totals for Massachusetts
The snow is expected to start falling late Friday, Feb. 6, and continue throughout the day on Saturday, Feb. 7, according to NWS. The snow should clear up that night, making way for (cold) sunshine on Sunday, Feb. 8.
“We’re confident most people will be shoveling at least 2 to 4 inches of snow,” Nocera said.

Frigid temperatures expected across MA
Several warning and advisories are in effect for the weekend due to the cold weather.
Extreme Cold Warning (from Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. to Feb. 8 at 1 p.m.):
“Dangerously cold” wind chills as low as -25 to -30 degrees are expected in central and western Massachusetts starting Saturday, Feb. 7. The cold could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes, NWS said. Here are the counties impacted:
- Hampden County – eastern and western
- Hampshire County – eastern and western
- Worcester County – northern and southern
Cold Weather Advisory (from Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. to Feb. 8 at 1 p.m.):
“Very cold” wind chills as low as -20 degrees are expected in portions of eastern, northeastern, and southeastern Massachusetts starting Saturday, Feb. 7. The wind chills could result in hypothermia or frostbite if precautions aren’t taken, NWS said. Here are the counties impacted:
