CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College women’s basketball was dealt a 73-58 setback on Sunday afternoon to California. The Eagles drop to 4-17 and 0-7 in the ACC, while the Golden Bears improve to 11-9 and 2-5 in the league.

Lily Carmody came off the bench for a team-high 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting. The sophomore guard also led the way with seven rebounds. Jocelyne Grier poured in 15 points on six field goals, and Kayla Rolph netted 10 to round out the leading scorers. Amirah Anderson led the team with three assists.

Cal started the game off on a 13-0 run in the first 5:55 of the game, and later went into the second period with a 21-10 edge after shooting 72.7 percent from the field.

The Eagles wouldn’t go away quietly in the second period, slicing the gap to four after Rolph ignited an 11-2 run. Carmody and Rolph led the charge, scoring all 11 points during the surge. BC went into the half trailing 30-23 following an Erin Houpt layup.

Another strong start to the quarter pushed Cal’s lead to double digits midway through the third. BC was able to cut into the deficit thanks to seven straight points while trailing by 12. Two free throws at the end of the frame gave the visitors a 48-41 lead.

A Carmody layup shortened the gap to five to begin the fourth. However, the Gold Bears scored 17 of the next 19 points to pull away for the win. Cal hit 14 3-pointers and shot 50 percent from the field.

BC has Thursday off before heading to Louisville to face the Cardinals on Sunday.

    Tip-Ins

    • The 17 points are the most in ACC play for Carmody, while the seven boards are a season best and tie a career high.
    • Carmody averaged 14.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, and shot 45.8 percent in two league games this week.
    • It’s the second time the Eagles have had a player score at least 15 off the bench, and the first time since last season two players scored at least 15 as a reserve.
    • Grier is second in the ACC among freshmen with 174 points off the bench.
