“Playing for a sports team in Boston, that’s enough said right there,” said Smith. “That’s a dream come true, to be able to play in front of my friends and family after living abroad for a couple years. I’m just so excited to be a part of something so special, especially in the first year of this club, and to play for Boston. It’s surreal.”

Smith Makes Her Return to Boston

Smith signed her first professional contract with second-tier team, FHL, in Iceland where she scored 15 goals in 14 games. FHL went on to win the league title and Smith was promoted to the first-division club, Breiðablik.

During her time with Breiðablik, Smith scored 9 goals in seven league games and helped them win the Besta deild kvenna in both 2024 and 2025. Smith is one of the few players to achieve the pairing of winning Iceland’s second-division and first-division league titles within the same year.

Although Smith played abroad, she grew up playing youth soccer with South Shore Select and Whitman Hanson Regional High School. She even played at Boston College from 2019-2022 where she earned ACC All-Freshman Team and played a fifth year due to COVID-19 eligibility at Texas A&M.

“Sammy is a local player who, after a strong college career, began her professional journey internationally. That experience has helped shape her game, and she’s been a key contributor for Breiðablik in Iceland, scoring consistently and competing for trophies,” said Boston Legacy general manager Domè Guasch. “She’s a versatile forward with a natural instinct for goal, and her Boston roots bring an edge and authenticity that align well with the culture we’re building. We’re excited to welcome her home and see her make an impact here in Boston.”

    Boston Locks In Key Talent

While Smith is no stranger to Boston, this will mark her first season in the NWSL with Boston joining as the 15th team in the league.

Smith is also officially the club’s 15th player signing as they recently signed key players such as U.S. Women’s National Team goalkeeper Casey Murphy, NWSL Champion Ella Stevens, goalkeeper Laurel Ivory, and Canadian international Amanda Allen.

Smith joins the frontline of forward alongside Barbara Olivieri, Chloe Ricketts, and Aïssata Traoré, who is the first player to join the NWSL from Mali in West Africa.

With 15 players secured for the 2026 season, teams in the NWSL will have a roster of 22-26 players with the option to add four Supplemental Players.

NWSL players will return for preseason in the next month as the season begins in mid-March when Boston Legacy makes their debut at Gillette Stadium on Saturday, March 14, 2026.
