WESTWOOD — To be continued.

Catholic Conference rivals Xaverian and St. John’s Prep battled to the final play on Thanksgiving, with the host Hawks hanging on for a 21-18 victory and their first league title since 2018, but the programs will meet again Dec. 6 in the Division 1 Super Bowl at Gillette Stadium.

Xaverian (10-2, 5-0) survived a near-collapse after Prep (11-1, 4-1) scored twice off fumbles in the final four minutes. Jackson Holmes broke up a halfback pass in the end zone from the 5-yard line as time expired.

“If they think we got the best shot from that team, no way,” said Xaverian coach Al Fornaro. “If anything, [the Eagles are] going to be confident because of how they moved the ball on us. We have to finish the job next Saturday.”

With a 49-16 victory over Arlington Catholic, Shawsheen notched its 30th straight home win, encompassing the entire careers of the Rams’ seniors.

It was Shawsheen’s 26th win in a row overall, which leads the state.

A game that had only seen opposing field goals through the first half gained some momentum on a Cam DeLeskey interception on the first play of the third quarter. DeLeskey then finished off a 43-yard drive with a 3-yard keeper.

Trailing 21-6 entering the fourth quarter, Walpole’s Mason Falcone took it up the middle for a 1-yard rushing score set up by a huge completion from Blake Pileski to Aiden Hoyle. Conversion attempt was stuffed as Ty Montiero-Cooper sacks Pileski.

Beautiful onside kick from Mateo Filipi is recovered by Walpole. Weymouth is flagged for a late hit on the quarterback during the following drive and Jeremiah Jean pushes through the pile for a 5-yard rushing score. Mateo Filipi sinks the extra point and Weymouth’s lead is cut to 21-19 with 5:32 left.

Patrick Collins ties Milton single-season TD record (32) with his 33-yard TD strike to Ronan Sammon with 10:01 left in the third quarter. Aidan Rowley’s PAT makes it 17-0 Milton over Braintree.

He then set the record on a 7-yard toss to Ronan Sammon with 5:13 left in 3Q. Rowley’s PAT gives Milton a 24-0 lead.

Collins threw his fourth TD pass of the game on a 35-yard strike to Noah Woodley with 2:53 left in the third quarter. Rowley’s PAT makes it 31-0 Milton. Collins now has 34 TD passes on season.

Touchdowns of 94, 48, and 53 yards have highlighted the explosive nature of the English offense. 12 plays run for English compared to 41 by the Wolfpack.

English scored with 37 seconds left in the half when Pierre Lovenson went over the top in the wind for Isaiah Peebles. Peebles sheds an arm-tackle and takes it in for a 48-yard TD. 2-pt rush fails.

Looking for a win in Ken LaChapelle’s final game after 50 years at the helm, Northbridge broke open a game that was scoreless after one quarter to take a 27-0 lead into halftime.

Mo Rodney Daigle’s 50-yard rushing TD got the scoring started, and Joel LaChapelle (coach’s grandson) muscled his way in for a 1-yard TD. Then, a pick-six from Luke Davis — and a 14-yard TD from Kevin DiMuzio.

Fairhaven 7, Dartmouth 0 — All the Super Bowl-bound Blue Devils needed was three plays for a 74-yard scoring drive.They are up 7-0 early after this 35-yard touchdown run by sophomore QB Jackson Ponte.

Happy Thanksgiving from Braintree where the 95th edition of the Milton-Braintree Thanksgiving holiday rivalry will unfold at Alumni Stadium. As is his holiday custom, a holiday greeting from Milton head coach Steve Dembowski to get it kicked off.

Although Milton was eliminated in the Division 3 state semifinals last week, there is still plenty to play for: Quarterback Patrick Collins is three TD passes from surpassing the school’s single-season record (33) set by Patrick Miller in 2024.

Also the Wildcats (9-2) will be playing for their third 10-win season in school history and a chance to claim a share of the Bay State Conference title if Walpole is able to defeat Weymouth today.

Both the best game and the biggest milestone belonged to Greater Lawrence on Wednesday night.

Not only did Reggies senior running back Gustavo Varela break the state’s all-time rushing record, but his team rallied from a 16-point deficit in the final 4 minutes, 44 seconds, recovering a pair of onside kicks and scoring three times in the final 1:43, including a pair of Varela TD catches.

It was one of several memorable games from Thanksgiving’s Eve — Plymouth South needed OT to top Plymouth North at Fenway Park — which served as a delicious appetizer before we stuff ourselves this morning.

▪ With a 12-6 victory over Keefe Tech, Minuteman finished 6-5, the program’s first winning record in 12 years. The win came thanks to a dominant secondary that finished with 11 pass breakups and two interceptions.

▪ Blue Hills was so successful running the ball in a 30-16 victory over Bristol-Plymouth that three backs finished with more than 100 rushing yards: Colton Metcalf (136 yards, 2 TDs), Kanyinsola Olanrewaju (149, TD), and Mikey McDonagh (104, TD).

Tim Durocher, Plymouth South — The senior is headed off to the Army, but first he scored three touchdowns, rushing for 70 yards on 15 carries and passing for 96 yards and a touchdown in a 27-21 overtime win over Plymouth North at Fenway Park.

James Leonard, Minuteman — The junior did a bit of everything, rushing for a score, intercepting a pass, and tying for the team lead with five tackles in a 12-6 victory over Keefe Tech.

Jordan Pedro, Tri-County — The sophomore was everywhere in a 51-14 win over Old Colony, drilling five extra points, catching four passes for 84 yards and a touchdown, and forcing and recovering a fumble.

Aavian Pena, KIPP — The junior ran 14 times for 150 yards and two scores, adding a receiving touchdown in a 34-11 victory against Lynn Tech.

Declan Walker, Tri-County — The senior made the most of his final game, completing 16 of 25 passes for 256 yards and three touchdowns in a 51-14 win over Old Colony.

Thanksgiving week. For football players in Massachusetts, the fire still burns bright.

Though the games themselves have taken a few hits lately — the MIAA’s playoff system is the main source of grumbling — mid-morning rivalry clashes still bring out the townsfolk in ways other local sporting traditions do not. With those games come a week of rituals performed in the spirit of unity and ubuntu.

Some teams burn in effigy their opponent’s mascot. Some torch an old football cleat. All over the state there are alumni gatherings, toasts, and roasts . . . plus, surprise collisions and explosions.

Minutes before a pivotal late-October matchup against Somerville, the Lynn English football team bounced around the sideline, tapping shoulder pads and getting pumped up to the stadium music. Amid the pregame fervor, senior quarterback Shane Knowlton Simard took a few steps away from his teammates for a moment of quiet reflection.

Knowlton Simard always completes the same ritual just before kickoff, planting on one knee to say a prayer for his own blessings and the health of everyone taking the field.

In the decade since Knowlton Simard and his younger sister, Kortney, entered foster care and faced an uncertain future together, he has found faith and gratitude to keep him balanced.

“I don’t take life for granted,” said Knowlton Simard, now 17. “Every time before I step on the field, I want to take that moment to be thankful. I pray no one gets hurt, and just remember where I’m coming from.”

Swampscott at Marblehead, 10 a.m. — A rivalry that routinely draws some of the biggest crowds in the state has produced some epic finishes, with Marblehead leading, 59-49-6, heading into the 115th meeting. Pick: MARBLEHEAD.

Marshfield at Duxbury, 10 a.m. — Marshfield has won six of the last seven meetings, but for the first time since 2019, Duxbury isn’t looking ahead to the Super Bowl. Pick: MARSHFIELD.

Needham at Wellesley, 10 a.m. — The oldest public school rivalry in the country continues with the 138th installment. Wellesley leads, 66-62-9, but Needham has won the past two years. Pick: WELLESLEY.

Boston Latin vs. English High, 10 a.m. (Harvard Stadium) — Of course, Massachusetts also boasts the oldest continuous rivalry in the country. Latin holds an 84-40-13 lead in the series, although English has taken three of the last four matchups. Pick: ENGLISH.

Lynn English vs. Lynn Classical, 10 a.m. (Manning Field) — Classical is looking for a 60th win in a series the Rams lead, 59-42-9. English can channel the frustration of getting left out of the Division 3 postseason despite winning the Greater Boston League. Pick: LYNN ENGLISH.

Scituate at Hingham, 10 a.m. — Hingham is 7-3 with the program’s first win over Duxbury since 2007. Scituate is headed to a third straight Super Bowl and played its starters while taking the past two Thanksgiving matchups. Pick: SCITUATE.

Bedford at Burlington, 10 a.m. — This is only the fourth meeting between strong programs with their former rivals (Lexington and Concord-Carlisle) now playing each other. Burlington posted its first undefeated regular season since 2006 and looks to snap a three-game Thanksgiving losing skid to the Buccaneers. Pick: BEDFORD.

Fairhaven at Dartmouth, 10:30 a.m. —This rivalry has become razor close with Fairhaven taking a 45-43-4 lead by winning three of the past four. The Blue Devils are headed to another Division 6 Super Bowl. Pick: FAIRHAVEN.

The weather is always a giant question mark, determining whether you’ll go to the game and if you’ll enjoy it — outside of your team winning, of course. Most games are played between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

If you’re not heading to any of the football games, maybe you’re running in or watching friends and family participate in one of the 30-plus turkey trots in the Boston area.

This year, most of New England will be dry with partly cloudy skies. However, a pair of passing storms to the north will bring a pesky breeze across each New England state, giving already cold temperatures an extra bite. So, you’ll certainly want to bundle up Thursday morning.
