Harvard University police said the explosion happened shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday at the Goldenson Building on Longwood Avenue.
Two Massachusetts men have been arrested in connection with Saturday’s explosion at Harvard Medical School, the FBI said Tuesday.
Special agents and officers with FBI Boston’s Joint Terrorism Task Force and the Harvard University Police Department made the arrests, the FBI’s Boston bureau said in a statement posted to X.
Authorities have not publicly identified the two men. The FBI promised further details will be released during a 1 p.m. press conference with the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Harvard University police said the explosion happened shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday at the Goldenson Building on Longwood Avenue in Boston. An officer arrived to find two people fleeing the building on foot but was unable to stop them, university police said.
Emergency crews found smoke, burn marks, and debris in a fourth floor hallway, and the Boston Fire Department’s arson unit reported that the explosion appeared to be intentional, according to university police. Boston police swept the building for additional explosives but found none.
In a message to the medical school community Sunday, Harvard leaders emphasized no one was injured in the blast.
“The small section of the fourth-floor hallway where the explosion took place has been cleared and is fully operational,” Dean of the Faculty of Medicine George Q. Daley and Executive Dean for Administration Lisa M. Muto wrote.
“There was no structural damage to the building, and all labs and equipment remain intact,” they continued. “Cleaning crews are on site to help ensure everything is ready for the beginning of the work week [Monday].”
University police also released photos of two masked suspects.
