The Stacy Middle School girls volleyball team in Milford recently raised $1,300 for cancer care during two recent “Pink Out” charity matches, according to a community announcement.

The matches, held against Oliver Ames of Easton and Nipmuc Regional of Upton, aimed to raise awareness about breast cancer and to support the Milford Regional Medical Center Oliva Fund for Cancer Care, according to the announcement.

The Pink Out event, which started as a single charity match several years ago, has grown to include two matches. Oliver Ames conducted its own Pink Out game and also made a donation to the Oliva Fund.

Stacy Middle School coaches Celeste Salley and Meredith Purtell led the effort, according to the announcement. Players dressed in pink and collected donations from friends and family. Inspirational signs and posters were also a staple of the events.

“The players really get behind these efforts,” Salley said in a statement. “There isn’t a family around that hasn’t been touched by cancer, so it’s personal for a lot of these young ladies.”

Oliver Ames was inspired by last year’s Pink Out game, prompting it to hold its own Pink Out match and donate to Stacy’s fundraising this year. The Stacy team thanked Oliver Ames players, families and Coach Gary Erickson for their donation. They also thanked Nipmuc players, families and Coach Bob Bennett for their participation in this year’s event.
