New England Patriots cornerback Carlton Davis III has been ruled out for Sunday’s matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders due to a neck injury, leaving New England without its starting outside corner for the pivotal Week 5 game.

Davis has played in three games this season, recording 16 total tackles, including 13 solo tackles. He has added one pass breakup but has not recorded an interception, forced fumble or sack on the year. His physical coverage and veteran presence will be missed against a Raiders passing attack that has found ways to consistently make plays throughout the opening month of the year.

Davis’ absence compounds with Christian Gonzalez also being ruled out for the game due to a shoulder injury. With both starters unavailable, New England’s reserve cornerbacks and safety unit will be looked at to carry more of the burden against Las Vegas’ wide receivers and tight ends.

Raiders quarterback Kirk Cousins has completed 93-of-144 passes for 1,026 yards, 11 touchdowns and four interceptions. New England’s depleted secondary faces a challenging test in Week 5.
