Massachusetts has launched a new free app to help gambling addicts.
Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s Office of Problem Gambling Services introduced the app, called “Evive,” on Sept. 30. The app is for people “affected by gambling harm” and is meant to support the Massachusetts Problem Gambling Helpline by providing a digital space for 24/7 care.
“Recovery is not one decision. It is a series of moments when someone needs a door and finds one open,” Victor Ortiz, Director of the Office of Problem Gambling Services at DPH, said in a statement. “For 10 years, we’ve listened closely to people living this experience. They’ve told us, time and again, that support needs to be there around the clock. What we’re offering now is a direct response to what they’ve asked for. It doesn’t replace the helpline — it extends it, so people feel supported whenever they need us.”
The app’s launch comes as a West Virginia man filed a class action lawsuit against DraftKings, a Boston-based sports betting company, accusing them of using artificial intelligence to target problem gamblers.
The DPH said they also deliberately chose to launch it at the beginning of football season, when there’s a “significant increase in gambling engagement.”
What does gambling app do?
The app provides “daily check-ins, progress tracking, and evidence-based lessons” to help people reduce their gambling habits and move toward recovery, according to the press release.
It also provides “peer support features” to help people connect with others and feel less isolated.
“This new resource is designed for people who may not yet feel ready for clinical services but are seeking a safe, supportive way to start making changes. It adds another pathway into recovery — one that meets people where they are and helps them move forward at their own pace,” reads the press release.
Evive is available for free download on iOS and Android. Massachusetts also offers a multilingual problem gambling helpline at 800-373-5050 or online chat at MAProblemGamblingHelpline.Org.
