Saturday’s girls basketball: Wadsworth, Copley, STVM win regional championships to advance to state semifinals

    Division I, Region 1 final

Wadsworth 64, Mentor 55: Lauren Decker scored 23 points to lead the Grizzlies (24-2) to a win over the Cardinals (24-2) at Barberton High School.

Wadsworth advanced to the girls basketball state tournament for the seventh time. The Grizzlies won state championships in 1997 and 2016, and were state semifinalists in 1998, 1999, 2006 and 2018.

Wadsworth will play Cincinnati Princeton (22-4) at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 12, at the University of Dayton Arena. Princeton advanced with a 65-47 win over Lakota West (20-6).

“This truly has been an unforgettable season with all the girls and all the coaches,” Decker said. “I just couldn’t be more grateful for this team, especially for my senior season.”

This will be Wadsworth’s fourth state tournament appearance under coach Andrew Booth, who guided the 2016 state championship team and the 2006 and 2018 state semifinal teams.

“That will go down in Wadsworth girls basketball history, which has a pretty rich tradition, obviously, as one of the greatest big-game performances that we’ve had,’ Booth said of Decker. “That goes for before I got here, too. The kid, she has an extra gear and an extra drive and such a competitive spirit. She just elevates everyone, but then she has that ability to elevate herself. When the game was on the line, it was pretty clear that No. 10 was going to have the ball in her hands and she was going to make a play. More often than not tonight, that turned into a positive for us.”

Wadsworth’s Natalie Moser contributed 14 points, Natalie Maddox finished with 10 points, Julia Maddox scored eight points and Marah Minor added five points against Mentor.

“For me, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” Minor said. “I don’t know too many people that can say they went to states with their team, especially their senior year. I just love this team.”

Decker made a shot in the paint to give Wadsworth a 52-42 lead with 5:27 remaining in the fourth quarter and a free throw to make it 53-42 with 4:56 on the clock. Julia Maddox made a layup at 4:28 to extend Wadsworth’s lead to 55-42.

“We stayed really mentally strong and we were able to keep our composure and just wear them down,” Julia Maddox said. “We played so well as a team together and we prepared for this moment. Booth prepared us in practice, and we were ready for it.”

Mentor trimmed its deficit to 56-50 with less than three minutes to go, but Wadsworth had an answer. Natalie Maddox made two layups to stretch the lead to 60-50 with around two minutes to go and Minor made two free throws to make it 62-50 with 1:00 left.

“We just kept our confidence and our energy,” Natalie Maddox said. “We just focused on ourselves. We can only control how we play and we just brought a lot of energy.”

Julia Maddox and Natalie Moser scored six points apiece in the first quarter as Wadsworth built a 20-10 lead in the first eight minutes. Decker scored 10 points in the second quarter to help the Grizzlies lead 34-26 at halftime.

“We just kept going at them,” Natalie Moser said. “We didn’t give them anything easy. Our defense was on point, and we mainly stopped their two main scorers.”

Wadsworth led 45-39 through three quarters and increased its advantage in the final eight minutes.

“They got better every day in practice,” Booth said of his players. “… I think the confidence they developed throughout the season, in terms of we played a hell of a schedule and the way we were able to challenge ourselves night and night out, it led us to games like Wednesday night against a very good Jackson team and then today against a very, very good Mentor team. I am very proud of them.”

Keira Coleman and Ashlyn McKinney paced Mentor with 15 points apiece.

    Division III, Region 9 final

Copley 67, Brush 51: Evelyn McKnight scored 34 points and Zoey Van Voorhis contributed 20 points to lead Copley (21-6) to a win over Brush (21-6) at the Canton Memorial Field House.

Copley advanced to its third state tournament after being a state semifinalist in 2006 and 2024. It will be Copley’s second state semifinal appearance under coach Julie Solis.

“On the big stage, I think they both showed exactly who they are,” Solis said of McKnight and Van Voorhis. “They both came out and did what they do well. I think when the game got down to a point where Ev needed to take over, I think Evelyn showed exactly why she’s the one of the best players in the state and why she is a McDonald’s All-American nominee.

“I think Zoey kept us in it in the first half. It was kind of like a tale of two halves. Zoey in one and Ev still doing things, and then Ev came out and took over the second half. They work together defensively. They have chemistry from playing together that long. I am just very proud of them.”

Copley will play Dayton Chaminade Julienne (22-4) at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 12, at Wright State University’s Nutter Center. CJ advanced with a 49-45 win over Dayton Archbishop Carroll (23-4).

“It feels great,” McKnight said. “We did this our sophomore year. … I feel like we had a great game-plan coming into this game and we can’t wait for states.”

Van Voorhis made two 3-pointers in the first quarter as Copley led 13-9 at the end of eight minutes of action. Van Voorhis made four more 3s in the second quarter to help Copley extend its lead to 31-20 at halftime.

“Scouting them before, we knew what defenses they were going to play and just getting into open gaps really helps me just be open to shoot 3s,” Van Voorhis said. “They didn’t guard that. I just got hot.”

McKnight had six points at halftime and then scored 12 points in the third quarter and 16 points in the fourth quarter as Copley continued to separate from Brush.

McKnight made two layups and two jumpers to give Copley a 41-26 lead with 3:14 left in the third quarter. She made eight free throws and four two-point shots in the final eight minutes.

Brush and Copley relied heavily on starters to the point that two players from each team fouled out. Brush sisters Tatiana Mason and Nylah Mason battled foul trouble, and Tatiana fouled out with 2:23 to go in the fourth quarter with Copley leading 57-47.

“We knew they thought they were going to come in and win, but playing off that and building off that created a lot of excitement on our side,” Copley’s Jayli Owens said.

McKnight also had seven rebounds, seven assists and two steals to go with her 34 points.

Copley’s Miranda Stillman finished with five points and six rebounds and Alejandra Morrondo-Garcia had four points and six rebounds.

“It’s been crazy,” said Morrondo-Garcia, a foreign exchange student from Madrid, Spain. “I couldn’t imagine coming here and also going to states. It’s crazy for me.”

Tatiana Mason paced Brush with 20 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and three assists.

“We knew it was going to be a tough one,” said Solis, who was Twinsburg’s coach when it won Division I state championships in 2011 and 2012 and was a state runner-up in 2013.

“You have a day to pretty much prepare between games having played on Thursday night, but we came up with a gameplan. I told my assistants, ‘That’s why when I come up with something I just kind of like try to stay by myself because I don’t want people giving me other ideas or messing with my thought process.’ We came up with a gameplan and I thought the kids did an excellent job today of following that gameplan and we were able to be successful.”

    Division III, Region 10

St. Vincent-St. Mary 46, Toledo Notre Dame Academy 36: Melania Cornute scored 20 points to power the Irish (21-5) to a win over the Eagles (15-11) at the Elida Fieldhouse.

STVM advanced to the girls basketball state tournament for the seventh time. The Irish won state championships in 1979, 1980 and 1995, and were state semifinalists in 1993, 2014 and 2019.

“Today was incredible,” STVM coach Carley Whitney said. “I am so proud of our team and our program. This group has rallied together and gotten over the regional final hump. We are headed back to state. I am so happy for every girl in this program, every coach in this program and every fan. These kids have fought and they deserve this moment.

“… Melania is gritty. She creates so many opportunities for our team. She has an endless gas tank. Melania is unique.  There will not be another one.”

STVM will play Unioto (25-2) at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 12, at Wright State University’s Nutter Center. Unioto advanced with a 66-44 win over Columbus Bishop Hartley (19-7). Milee Smith led Unioto with 42 points and 14 rebounds.

This will be STVM’s second state tournament appearance under coach Whitney, who piloted the 2019 team to the state semifinals. She was an assistant coach with the 2014 state semifinal team.

STVM jumped on ND and led 14-2 at the end of the first quarter. The Irish led 22-14 at halftime and 31-23 through three quarters.

“We had a good gameplan and the girls executed that game plan,” Whitney said. “ND has good guard play. The girls did a great job shutting down the paint. Holding them to two first-quarter points was crucial in securing this win.”

STVM’s Taylor Miller, Sydney Ferguson, Taylor Rogers-Williams and Tatum Smith scored six points apiece.

“Taylor Rogers-Williams was fabulous tonight,” Whitney said. “She had three blocks. She controlled the paint. Rebounded, finished and made great passes. She was active, under control, and did her job. Kudos to Taylor.”

Saturday’s boys basketball: CVCA, Hoban win district championships to advance to regional semifinals

Division III, Northeast 5 district final

“We played very well,” CVCA coach Kevin Byrne said. “St. V is very difficult to play against. We got off to a slow start, but finished the first quarter well and played very well in the second quarter. A total team win. It was the best defense we’ve played all year.”

DeCarlo Pince paced STVM with 20 points, Leigh Cotton scored 10 points and Ascen Lomack added six points.

“Tyler played a complete game on both ends of the floor,” Byrne said. “He scored for us and made Prince work to score his points Charley and Brayden really stabilized us against their pressure. Both scored and handled the ball. They both played great defense as well.

“Connor Gray continued to be rock solid around the basket for us, finishing on the back end of the break and anchoring our defense at the basket. Moses Bader was fantastic off the bench. He scored, he rebounded and he was on the floor after every loose ball. A total winning effort on his part.”

CVCA will meet Toledo Central Catholic in a Region 10 semifinal at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 11 at the University of Toledo’s Savage Arena.

Wednesday’s girls basketball: Starters guide Wadsworth into regional final; Sydney Ferguson, Melania Cornute lead STVM into regional final

Division I, Region 1 regional semifinal

Wadsworth 44, Jackson 33: All of Wadsworth’s scoring came from its starters in a win at Barberton High School. Junior Natalie Moser led Wadsworth (23-2) with 12 points and seven rebounds. Moser scored eight points in the second half as the Grizzlies outscored the Polar Bears 22-14.

Wadsworth will meet Mentor (24-1) in a regional final at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at Barberton. Mentor defeated Canton McKinley 44-40 on Wednesday.

Other key contributors for Wadsworth were sophomore Julia Maddox (10 points, three assists), senior Lauren Decker (eight points, seven rebounds, four steals, three assists), senior Marah Minor (eight points) and sophomore Natalie Maddox (six points, 15 rebounds, three steals, two blocks).

“Our veteran players, who were at this level last year, really led the way with their energy, toughness and attention to detail on the scouting report,” Wadsworth coach Andrew Booth said. “The youngsters then followed their lead.”

Wadsworth led 22-19 at halftime, and opened the third quarter with a 7-0 run that featured a layup and two free throws by Moser and a 3-pointer by Decker. Moser made two layups to give Wadsworth a 37-29 lead in the fourth quarter. Minor made a 3-pointer to give Wadsworth a 44-32 lead with 3:15 remaining.

Senior Maddie Lepley paced Jackson (22-4) with 17 points, six rebounds and three steals.

“The key to our victory was on the defensive end,” Booth said. “To hold a very talented Jackson team to 33 points on under 30% shooting was truly a team effort.”

Division III, Region 10 regional semifinal

St. Vincent-St. Mary 47, Highland 39: The Irish will make their second consecutive regional final appearance after sophomore Sydney Ferguson scored 22 points and hauled in 13 rebounds in a win over Highland.

“I was ready to play from the start,” Ferguson said. “I was ready to win. My coach was like, ‘Come on Syd, we need you to get these rebounds so we can win.’ I was like ‘I got you.’ And I did it.”

Junior Melania Cornute added 18 and 10 boards for STVM.

“Highland is a good team,” STVM coach Carley Whitney said. “They are good at what they do. They just keep coming at you and keep coming at you. They had a great game plan.

“The fourth quarter showcased exactly what those two [Ferguson and Cornute] are capable of. … Sydney Ferguson has an all-around game. She is a three-level scorer. She showcased tonight she is not just tall, she’s big and she’s gonna make you pay.”

Highland led 14-11 at the end of the first quarter. STVM led 24-22 at halftime and 31-29 through three quarters.

“We just had that momentum coming out of third quarter,” Cornute said. “We talked to you each other and we were like, ‘Let’s go. We’ve got this. Let’s end this right now.’ We came out strong and just put it all out on the floor and played together.”

STVM (20-5) improved to 4-2 in regional semifinal appearances under Whitney.

Junior Emeri Gausman, sophomore Madison Morgan and senior Grace Shondel each scored 10 points for Highland (22-4).

“We are losing two seniors [to graduation],” Highland coach James Madison said. “I think we can get back to regionals again. We have most of our team coming back. We gotta learn from this loss. The girls fought hard. They hung right with them. It is tough right now, but we will be back next year.”

Madison said Ferguson was “tough” to stop. “She’s 6-foot-4,” Madison said. “She hit a couple of 3s. She got a couple of big rebounds. She was the best player on the floor tonight. She hurt us.”

STVM moves on to play Toledo Notre Dame Academy (15-10), a 35-30 winner over Norwalk, at 3 p.m. March 7 at Elida Fieldhouse.

“Our key word this year is believe,” Whitney said. “You have to believe. I think sometimes we get caught in the moment. We have put them in pressure situations. Our schedule has prepared them for moments like this, and they’re ready. When the fourth quarter started, I just said, ‘You guys gotta believe and you gotta play together and you gotta find your spots.’

“They found their spots and they did exactly what they had to to get the win. … I am so proud of them and how they handled the last 4½ minutes.”
