Tampa, Fla. – The Boston College Softball team (5-10) battled Indiana in a hitters game, but ultimately came up just short in a 12-9 decision to close out play at the USF Invitational on Sunday morning.
Abby Ptak opened the game with a RBI triple to right center to put the Eagles on the board first. The Hoosiers scored in the bottom of the inning to make it a 7-1 deficit after the first full inning.
BC responded immediately in the second. A single from Janis Espinoza and a sacrifice bunt by Carly Bunnell helped load the bases with no outs. Kae DePerio delivered with an RBI slap past the third baseman, before Sammy Horn drew a walk to bring home Tayve Borders. Emma Knight capped the rally with an RBI to pull BC right back into the game and cut the lead 7-4.
The fourth inning produced three runs for each team. DePerio laid down a bunt for a single at the top of the inning. A Horn single and Ptak walk loaded the bases once again for Knight to bring in two more off an Indiana error before she would score herself at the end of the half inning to tie up the game in the middle of the fourth at 7-7 before the Hoosiers added their three.
BC had one more rally in the sixth inning with two runs off four hits. Knight drove in another run after three consecutive singles set the table, and Adriana Martinez followed with an RBI single through the right side.
The late rally wasn’t enough to close the gap, as Indiana held on for the 12–9 victory.
