    Get Starting Point

A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday.

    By Brendan Kurie, Globe staff

Another Thanksgiving is in the books, and with it hundreds of high school football careers.

But we’re here to focus on all the accomplishments on the field, from record-breaking runs to scene-stealing finishes.

No game was more memorable than Northbridge’s 48-13 win over Uxbridge, which marked Ken LaChapelle’s 411th, and final, victory as head coach with his 101-year-old father and 97-year-old mother in attendance.

The final game of LaChapelle’s 50-year coaching career, which began when Gerald Ford was president, featured three touchdowns from his grandson (and quarterback) Joel LaChapelle, and two scores for another grandson, Uxbridge’s Camden LaChapelle.

Ken LaChapelle retires with the most football wins in state history.

Motivated Marshfield uses long layoff to advantage, defeats Duxbury to clinch Patriot-Keenan title — 7:58 p.m.

    By Trevor Hass

In a perfect world, Marshfield would have had just five or six days to prepare for Thursday’s Thanksgiving showdown with Duxbury.

In reality, after a surprising first-round playoff loss to Malden Catholic, the Rams had 20 days. As much as the early exit stung, it did offer a silver lining that ultimately paid dividends.

“Three weeks is way too much for anybody,” said Marshfield coach Chris Arouca. “We didn’t want that. It was tough to keep them motivated for the first week or week and a half. Once we got past that, they were excited to play today. I think we saw that.”

The result was an impressive 16-6 triumph over the Dragons. The Rams (7-3) secured four second-half interceptions to clinch the Patriot League’s Keenan Division title outright for the second consecutive season.

Wellesley’s Bobby Shanahan has plenty to be thankful for, and celebrates by beating Needham — 7:12 p.m.

    By David Ostrowsky, Globe correspondent

Wellesley quarterback Bobby Shanahan has been firing touchdown passes to fellow senior Tennyson Charney throughout the 2020s. From their late-night workouts as middle schoolers to the Holy Cross-bound Charney’s emergence as Shanahan’s go-to receiver two years ago, the QB/WR tandem has been in lockstep.

Playing in their final high school game Thursday morning against Needham in the 138th edition of the longest public high school football rivalry, Shanahan and Charney hooked up on a 2-yard connection midway through the third quarter, giving the Raiders a commanding 20-6 lead that would stand as the final score.

But the victory at blustery Hunnewell Field may not be the last time Shanahan and Charney team up.

With a 93-yard sprint, and a pair of picks, Seth Sacco has a grand day in Winthrop win over Revere — 7:07 p.m.

    By Joe Dimino, Globe correspondent

With Winthrop backed up inside its own 10-yard line, senior Seth Sacco took a pitch, found daylight, and sprinted 93 yards for a game-breaking touchdown as the Vikings pulled away for a 29-12 Northeastern Conference victory over Revere in the teams’ 94th meeting.

That long-distance run also pushed Sacco post 1,000 yards rushing for his senior season.

“I was preparing a lot over the week, I knew my boys were going to get it for me,” said Sacco.

“I knew we were backed up in our own end and I knew we needed to make a big play.”

Sacco was unstoppable throughout, scoring twice and topping 200 yards rushing. He also picked off a pair of passes to help secure the victory.

Hingham blasts Super Bowl-bound Scituate to end season on high note — 6:40 p.m.

    By Joe Eachus, Globe correspondent

After a 37-7 drubbing last season on Thanksgiving, Hingham junior J.T. Reale cherished a chance at revenge.

Reale rode that revenge to over 150 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns on his way to team MVP honors as the Harbormen dominated Scituate this time around, 50-0.

“It’s good to get one last game in with my teammates, I’ve been playing with them since fifth grade. We wanted a little bit of revenge [after last year],” Reale said. “It’s great to go out with one last win for the seniors and cherish this moment with everyone.”

Lynn English lashes out at Lynn Classical for big win behind one-man wrecking crew — 6:35 p.m.

    By Mukala Kabongo, Globe correspondent

Shane Knowlton Simard totaled 345 yards of offense and five touchdowns to propel Lynn English to a 36-12 victory over Lynn Classical (3-8) in the 112th edition of the intracity rivalry.

“Shane’s a ball player,” Lynn English coach Tyllor McDonald said. “There’s nothing I can say, he’s the best player in the area.

The Bulldogs offense capitalized on freshman Kelian Smith’s interception in the end zone on the Rams’ opening drive.

Milton zeroes in on Braintree to finish season with historic team and individual efforts. ‘We had a lot to play for.’ — 6:29 p.m.

    By Michael Vega, Globe staff

Despite being eliminated from the Division 3 state semifinals last Saturday, the Milton football team still had plenty of objectives to attain before closing the book on its 2025 campaign.

The Wildcats had their sights on a 10-win season, the third in school history, senior quarterback Patrick Collins was within a stone’s throw of Patrick Miller’s single-season record (33) for touchdown passes, and Milton still had designs on winning a share of the Bay State Conference title, with a little help from Walpole in its Thanksgiving showdown against Weymouth.

“We had a lot to play for,” Milton coach Steve Dembowski said.

Chelmsford pulls out stops to put finishing touches on win over Billerica — 6:15 p.m.

    By Jake Seymour, Globe correspondent

    Chelmsford’s defense needed a stop.

The Lions’ 7-point lead was in jeopardy with four minutes to play after it allowed Billerica to drive the length of the field into the red zone. A swarm of white and maroon jerseys piled at the line of scrimmage, stripping the ball away from the Indians.

Chelmsford had regained control of the game, allowing it to drain the clock and secure a 19-12 win on Thanksgiving Day.

“It means everything,” Lions quarterback Anthony Mauriello said. “It’s a Super Bowl we have every year. It goes back, I don’t know how many years, but it’s huge history. You’ve just got to play for the love of the game, and you come out on top. It’s one of the best things.”

Fairhaven overcomes key injuries to beat rival Dartmouth ahead of Super Bowl appearance — 6:05 p.m.

    By Brad Joyal, Globe correspondent

With its starting quarterback limited and a key piece of its offensive line also sidelined, Fairhaven displayed resiliency in the 93rd installment of one of the state’s most even rivalries.

Senior Ian Alexion broke loose for a 21-yard touchdown scamper with 2:07 remaining to help Fairhaven avenge last year’s Thanksgiving loss with a 21-14 victory over Dartmouth at Memorial Stadium.

“I was getting through the hole all game, I was just waiting for that breakaway,” said Alexion, who finished with 122 yards on 17 carries.

James Warren gives Mansfield a leg up in a Hockomock win over rival Foxborough in 94th meeting — 5:36 p.m.

    By Keith Pearson, Globe correspondent

Before Mansfield and Foxborough met for the 94th time Thursday morning, Mansfield kicker James Warren said he went up to coach Mike Redding and asked for a shot at a long field goal.

The Saint Anselm-bound senior knows how to handle pressure, having kicked a walkoff field goal in the season opener against Bridgewater-Raynham.

But in his final game for Mansfield Warren made two attempts in the first quarter, converting a 28-yarder to set a school record for 15 career makes, and pushing a 39-yard attempt wide right.

    Hanover buries Super Bowl-bound Norwell — 5:00 p.m.

    By Lenny Rowe, Globe correspondet

Senior Colin Arnold threw four touchdown passes, classmate Brandon Errico had two TD receptions and a 73-yard kickoff return for a score, and Hanover coasted past Super Bowl-bound Norwell, 49-8, on Thursday morning.

For the senior-laden Hawks, (7-4), Thanksgiving marked one last game for the close-knit squad. Hanover leads the annual series, 34-24-1.

“They’re great kids above anything else,” said coach Brian Kelliher. “They were a joy to coach every day.”

This group has been to a state final, the final four, and recently the quarterfinals in Division 5.

“I just said to them, you deserve to go out on your terms, so let’s go out and just play,” Kelliher added.

Isaiah Peebles spells out an English win in 138th meeting with Boston Latin — 4:45 p.m.

    By Cam Kerry, Globe correspondent

English High quarterback Pierre Lovenson threw his hands in the air, signaling a touchdown.

Senior Isaiah Peebles hadn’t crossed midfield. It didn’t matter. The senior quarterback had seen this movie before.

Peebles outraced the defense, barreling 58 yards for his third touchdown of the day.

Behind Peebles’s standout day, English bested Boston Latin, 40-30, at Harvard Stadium on Thursday morning. In the 138th edition of the oldest continuous rivalry in the country, the Eagles (5-5) improved their mark to 41-84-13 all-time and have now won four of the last five meetings.

50 years. 411 wins. And Northbridge legend Ken LaChapelle savors his finale with family and friends — 4:40 p.m.

The morning before his team’s biggest game of the season, Northbridge coach Ken LaChapelle was busy preparing pastry, not playsheets.

At 5:30 a.m., the 77-year-old LaChapelle started to cook three apple pies — his contribution to what was likely the most memorable Thanksgiving dinner in memory.

On Thursday afternoon, 60-plus members of the LaChapelle family — including the coach’s five children, 22 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren — gathered under a 20-by-50-foot tent. Three large turkeys were served.

Weymouth staves off Walpole comeback to claim Bay State Herget crown — 4:30 p.m.

byline // By Toby Moses, Globe correspondent

Things looked bleak for Weymouth in the fourth quarter as Walpole recovered back-to-back onside kicks and drove down the field as the Wildcats clung to a 21-19 lead.

With the game on the line, Weymouth’s Isaiah Garcon forced a fumble and Ty Monteiro-Cooper made the recovery. On the next play, Amahri Gomes broke free and rumbled 79 yards for a touchdown, securing the 28-19 Bay State Conference victory at Weymouth High.

Behind more than 200 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns (4, 39, and 79 yards) from Gomes, Weymouth (8-3) captured its first Thanksgiving win since 2018 and clinched the Bay State Herget title.

“No one really thought we were going to be anything,” Gomes said in reference to his two-win freshman season. “Just to come out here and win the league championship, it’s everything we dreamed of as kids.”

Xaverian captures Catholic Conference over St. John’s Prep, with Super Bowl rematch looming — 2:35 p.m.

    By Nate Weitzer, Globe correspondent

    WESTWOOD — To be continued.

Catholic Conference rivals Xaverian and St. John’s Prep battled to the final play on Thanksgiving, with the host Hawks hanging on for a 21-18 victory and their first league title since 2018, but the programs will meet again Dec. 6 in the Division 1 Super Bowl at Gillette Stadium.

Xaverian's Dave Chiavegato (1) and Jackson Holmes break up a pass in the end zone intended for St. John's Prep's Pierson Scala on the final play of the game.

Xaverian (10-2, 5-0) survived a near-collapse after Prep (11-1, 4-1) scored twice off fumbles in the final four minutes. Jackson Holmes broke up a halfback pass in the end zone from the 5-yard line as time expired.

“If they think we got the best shot from that team, no way,” said Xaverian coach Al Fornaro. “If anything, [the Eagles are] going to be confident because of how they moved the ball on us. We have to finish the job next Saturday.”

Happy Thanksgiving from Braintree where the 95th edition of the Milton-Braintree Thanksgiving holiday rivalry will unfold at Alumni Stadium. As is his holiday custom, a holiday greeting from Milton head coach Steve Dembowski to get it kicked off.

Although Milton was eliminated in the Division 3 state semifinals last week, there is still plenty to play for: Quarterback Patrick Collins is three TD passes from surpassing the school’s single-season record (33) set by Patrick Miller in 2024.

Also the Wildcats (9-2) will be playing for their third 10-win season in school history and a chance to claim a share of the Bay State Conference title if Walpole is able to defeat Weymouth today.

Looking back at Wednesday night’s biggest moments — 9:30 a.m.

Both the best game and the biggest milestone belonged to Greater Lawrence on Wednesday night.

Not only did Reggies senior running back Gustavo Varela break the state’s all-time rushing record, but his team rallied from a 16-point deficit in the final 4 minutes, 44 seconds, recovering a pair of onside kicks and scoring three times in the final 1:43, including a pair of Varela TD catches.

It was one of several memorable games from Thanksgiving’s Eve — Plymouth South needed OT to top Plymouth North at Fenway Park — which served as a delicious appetizer before we stuff ourselves this morning.

    ▪ With a 12-6 victory over Keefe Tech, Minuteman finished 6-5, the program’s first winning record in 12 years. The win came thanks to a dominant secondary that finished with 11 pass breakups and two interceptions.

    ▪ Blue Hills was so successful running the ball in a 30-16 victory over Bristol-Plymouth that three backs finished with more than 100 rushing yards: Colton Metcalf (136 yards, 2 TDs), Kanyinsola Olanrewaju (149, TD), and Mikey McDonagh (104, TD).

Tim Durocher, Plymouth South — The senior is headed off to the Army, but first he scored three touchdowns, rushing for 70 yards on 15 carries and passing for 96 yards and a touchdown in a 27-21 overtime win over Plymouth North at Fenway Park.

James Leonard, Minuteman — The junior did a bit of everything, rushing for a score, intercepting a pass, and tying for the team lead with five tackles in a 12-6 victory over Keefe Tech.

Jordan Pedro, Tri-County — The sophomore was everywhere in a 51-14 win over Old Colony, drilling five extra points, catching four passes for 84 yards and a touchdown, and forcing and recovering a fumble.

Aavian Pena, KIPP — The junior ran 14 times for 150 yards and two scores, adding a receiving touchdown in a 34-11 victory against Lynn Tech.

Declan Walker, Tri-County — The senior made the most of his final game, completing 16 of 25 passes for 256 yards and three touchdowns in a 51-14 win over Old Colony.

They’re ready to go in Mansfield and Manning Field — 9:20 p.m.

The first live scenes are starting to trickle in as we get 40 minutes from most kickoffs.

The winner of the 94th installment of Foxborough at Mansfield will share the Hockomock Davenport crown with North Attleborough. Mansfield is 23-13 in the series under Mike Redding, who won his 300th game last Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving week. For football players in Massachusetts, the fire still burns bright.

Though the games themselves have taken a few hits lately — the MIAA’s playoff system is the main source of grumbling — mid-morning rivalry clashes still bring out the townsfolk in ways other local sporting traditions do not. With those games come a week of rituals performed in the spirit of unity and ubuntu.

Some teams burn in effigy their opponent’s mascot. Some torch an old football cleat. All over the state there are alumni gatherings, toasts, and roasts . . . plus, surprise collisions and explosions.

Morning read: At 7, he entered foster care. Now he’s a league MVP. — 8:45 p.m.

    By Matty Wasserman, Globe correspondent

Minutes before a pivotal late-October matchup against Somerville, the Lynn English football team bounced around the sideline, tapping shoulder pads and getting pumped up to the stadium music. Amid the pregame fervor, senior quarterback Shane Knowlton Simard took a few steps away from his teammates for a moment of quiet reflection.

Knowlton Simard always completes the same ritual just before kickoff, planting on one knee to say a prayer for his own blessings and the health of everyone taking the field.

In the decade since Knowlton Simard and his younger sister, Kortney, entered foster care and faced an uncertain future together, he has found faith and gratitude to keep him balanced.

“I don’t take life for granted,” said Knowlton Simard, now 17. “Every time before I step on the field, I want to take that moment to be thankful. I pray no one gets hurt, and just remember where I’m coming from.”

Who did Nate Weitzer pick to win today? — 8:30 a.m.

St. John’s Prep at Xaverian, 10 a.m. — The biggest game between private school foes is also the Division 1 Super Bowl matchup (Dec. 6 at Gillette Stadium). The Catholic Conference title is on the line in the 57th Thanksgiving meeting. Pick: XAVERIAN.

Foxborough at Mansfield, 10 a.m. — The winner of the 94th installment of this rivalry will share the Hockomock Davenport crown with North Attleborough. Mansfield is 23-13 in the series under Mike Redding, who won his 300th game last Thanksgiving. Pick: MANSFIELD.

Walpole at Weymouth, 10 a.m. — Weymouth (7-3, 3-0) can clinch the Bay State Herget title with a win and chip into a series the Wildcats trail, 23-5. Walpole (4-5, 2-1) can earn a share of the title with Milton (9-2, 2-1) also angling for a share at Braintree. Pick: WEYMOUTH.

King Philip at Franklin, 10 a.m. — Another Thanksgiving bout with league title implications, as Franklin (33-30-1 in the series) can earn a share of the Hockmock Kelley-Rex title with a home win. Pick: KING PHILIP.

Hanover at Norwell, 10 a.m. — Will Norwell rest any starters ahead of the program’s first Super Bowl appearance since 1999? Last year’s battle was a thriller with Norwell taking a 15-13 victory in double overtime. Pick: HANOVER.

Swampscott at Marblehead, 10 a.m. — A rivalry that routinely draws some of the biggest crowds in the state has produced some epic finishes, with Marblehead leading, 59-49-6, heading into the 115th meeting. Pick: MARBLEHEAD.

Marshfield at Duxbury, 10 a.m. — Marshfield has won six of the last seven meetings, but for the first time since 2019, Duxbury isn’t looking ahead to the Super Bowl. Pick: MARSHFIELD.

Needham at Wellesley, 10 a.m. — The oldest public school rivalry in the country continues with the 138th installment. Wellesley leads, 66-62-9, but Needham has won the past two years. Pick: WELLESLEY.

Boston Latin vs. English High, 10 a.m. (Harvard Stadium) — Of course, Massachusetts also boasts the oldest continuous rivalry in the country. Latin holds an 84-40-13 lead in the series, although English has taken three of the last four matchups. Pick: ENGLISH.

Lynn English vs. Lynn Classical, 10 a.m. (Manning Field) — Classical is looking for a 60th win in a series the Rams lead, 59-42-9. English can channel the frustration of getting left out of the Division 3 postseason despite winning the Greater Boston League. Pick: LYNN ENGLISH.

Scituate at Hingham, 10 a.m. — Hingham is 7-3 with the program’s first win over Duxbury since 2007. Scituate is headed to a third straight Super Bowl and played its starters while taking the past two Thanksgiving matchups. Pick: SCITUATE.

Bedford at Burlington, 10 a.m. — This is only the fourth meeting between strong programs with their former rivals (Lexington and Concord-Carlisle) now playing each other. Burlington posted its first undefeated regular season since 2006 and looks to snap a three-game Thanksgiving losing skid to the Buccaneers. Pick: BEDFORD.

Fairhaven at Dartmouth, 10:30 a.m. —This rivalry has become razor close with Fairhaven taking a 45-43-4 lead by winning three of the past four. The Blue Devils are headed to another Division 6 Super Bowl. Pick: FAIRHAVEN.

Today’s forecast: Bundle up, but you should stay dry — 8:00 a.m.

    By Ken Mahan, Globe staff

The weather is always a giant question mark, determining whether you’ll go to the game and if you’ll enjoy it — outside of your team winning, of course. Most games are played between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

If you’re not heading to any of the football games, maybe you’re running in or watching friends and family participate in one of the 30-plus turkey trots in the Boston area.

This year, most of New England will be dry with partly cloudy skies. However, a pair of passing storms to the north will bring a pesky breeze across each New England state, giving already cold temperatures an extra bite. So, you’ll certainly want to bundle up Thursday morning.
