Malden Catholic is officially the underdog of this year’s MIAA football tournament as the 12th-seeded Lancers took down No. 4 Hingham, 27-13, on Anthony Wadland’s three touchdowns to reach the Division 3 semifinals, becoming the only double-digit seed still dancing.
Other Friday night upsets — not counting 5-seeds bouncing 4-seeds — saw No. 7 North Attleborough top No. 2 Barnstable in Division 3, No. 6 Archbishop Williams over No. 3 Hanover in D5, No. 7 Bishop Fenwick defeat No. 2 Abington in D6, and No. 6 Clinton surprise No. 3 West Bridgewater, also in D6.
All eight No. 1 seeds have reached the semifinals.
▪ Gustavo Varela is reaching rarified air as his senior season for Greater Lawrence winds down. The tailback ran for 369 yards and five scores in Friday’s 48-13 State Vocational Large School quarterfinal win over Southeastern.
That gives him 1,926 yards on the season and 6,383 for his career, meaning with at least two games left in his career, he is 306 yards shy of Cedric Washington’s state record of 6,688 rushing yards, set from 1992-95 at Holyoke.
Varela sits third on the all-time list, after East Longmeadow’s Mike Maggipinto (6,462 from 2012-15) and ahead of Walpole’s Ryan Izzo (6,316 from 2006-09).
▪ Varela wasn’t the only one putting up dramatic rushing totals, as St. John’s Prep junior Maxwell Parent took advantage of the absence of injured quarterback Chris Vargas by rushing for a school-record 354 yards and adding five touchdowns in a 48-32 Division 1 quarterfinal win over Leominster.
▪ On Friday’s we usually keep these to the football realm, but Concord-Carlisle boys’ soccer coach Ray Pavlik earned a shoutout with his 350th career win, which came in a 2-1 overtime victory over Brookline in the Division 1 quarterfinals on Max Hepworth’s tally. Pavlik is in his 24th season with the Patriots, who will face top-seeded St. John’s Prep in a semifinal Monday at Manning Field (4:45 p.m.) in Lynn.
▪ Thursday’s nonplayoff slate saw a pair of record-breaking performances on the ground. Triton senior Carl Lucy took 17 carries for 328 yards and four touchdowns in a 34-20 win over Salem, setting the program’s single-game rushing record while also setting the school’s single-season rushing (1,835 yards), single-season touchdowns (30), and all-time points (262) records with a game to go.
▪ Malden sophomore Jayden McGuffie pulled off a similar feat, breaking the Golden Tornadoes’ program records for rushing yards in a season (1,727) and points in a season (168) after a 238-yard effort in a 28-26 win over Lexington. He secured the victory by making a tackle on a 2-point conversion attempt with no time remaining.
Patrick Collins, Milton — The senior put on a display with his right arm, amassing 364 yards and four touchdowns through the air, including 80- and 83-yard TD passes to Ronan Sammon and 44- and 67-yarders to Patrick Mason.
Grayson Foley, Scituate — The junior did it all in a 34-28 D4 win over Walpole, rushing for 220 yards and three touchdowns, catching two passes for 50 yards and a score, and taking a kickoff back 65 yards to the house.
Hudson Garrity, Archbishop Williams — Once again, when the spotlight got brighter, the freshman stepped up, completing 13 of 24 passes for 247 yards and four touchdowns as the Bishops held on for a 28-26 D5 win over Hanover.
Maxwell Parent, St. John’s Prep — You’ve read about him already. All the junior did was rush for a school-record 354 yards and score five times in a 48-32 D1 win over Leominster.
Brady Rhinesmith, Duxbury — The senior quarterback had his finest day of the season, throwing for 305 yards and four touchdowns on 14-of-18 passing to lift the Dragons past Burlington, 38-14, in Division 4.
Connor Scialdone, Amesbury — The junior provided two rushing touchdowns, then added a 77-yard kickoff return for a TD as the Redhawks took down the two-time defending Division 7 champions Uxbridge, 34-13.
Gustavo Varela, Greater Lawrence — Another repeat from above, as well as a repeat from this feature most weeks, the senior ran 18 times for 369 yards and five touchdowns in a 48-13 State Vocational Large School Tournament quarterfinal win over Southeastern.
