The Berkshire County high school soccer season came to a close over the weekend with three losses in the Round of 16 of respective MIAA State Tournaments.

Friday afternoon on Cape Cod, the Hoosac Valley boys were beaten by Saint John Paul II.

On Saturday, both the Mount Greylock girls and Monument Mountain boys were eliminated from the Division IV brackets.

The Hoosac boys were seeded 19th and had to make their second trip of the week down the Cape. Hoosac had knocked off No. 14 Upper Cape Cod RVT 2-1 in the opening round. That brought about Friday’s tilt at No. 3 Saint John Paul II, which plays in the town of Sandwich. Saint John Paul II beat Hoosac 2-0 on Friday.

Both the Greylock girls and Monument boys had won opening round games on their home fields in the Berkshires, but had long drives for the Round of 16.

The 11th-seeded Spartans won a 5-0 contest over Monomoy in Great Barrington, but then boarded busses Saturday morning for a noon tilt south of Boston at No. 6 Westport. A second straight trip to the D-IV quarterfinals wasn’t in the cards, as the Spartans lost a tight one 3-2. Monument had trailed 2-0 in the game before knotting it up.

The No. 13 Mounties, now back-to-back Western Massachusetts Class C champions, scored a comeback win over Tyngsborough in the opening round, were north of Boston Saturday afternoon to take on No. 4 Hamilton-Wenham.

The Generals kept Mount Greylock quiet for 80 minutes in a 2-0 win. Savannah Gauron and Lilly Giovannucci scored for the home team.

“We kept it close until a 65th minute direct kick by Giovannucci put it out of reach,” wrote coach Blair Dils. “The girls battled very hard today against a deep and talented Hamilton-Wenham team. Excellent defensive efforts from Maddie Powell, GG Nicastro, Rowan Apotsos and keeper Addie Cooper.”

Cooper made nine saves for Greylock.
